A friend of mine (who works for a major tv network) recently was very nice to hire me onto one of her shoots for a tv documentary. Being an on set photographer is both challenging and exhilarating, and I am happy I was able to jump in head first.
We shot at two different locations -
We Recycle - A Electronics Recycling Facility
Milk Thistle Farm - An Organic Dairy Farm
The goal was to document EVERYTHING... the actual shoot, the crew, the host, plus the real content - everything that happened in these locations. Being in the crew, I moved with the crew, and constantly... there was no real stopping to set up shots, I took what I was able to get while they worked, and they worked & moved fast. The camera is always moving, and the challenge was to not only stay out of everyone's way, but stay out of the shot (easier said than done) and get good enough angles/shots in the meantime.
I am really happy with how I was able to adjust to this - I'm somebody who's used to standing there and taking my time to setup everything about a shot. It seems obvious, but the cameramen always had the best angle (of course), and I had to make do with what I could get. I somehow ended up loving this situation. It forced me to think outside of the box, make quick decisions & get creative. In the end the spontaneity of it all is what struck me - a high paced, creative environment. This is something that is lacking the sessions I spend writing music. Writing with my mates is slow, analytical, and tedious. My personality tends to be drawn to the opposite - and this has definitely fulfilled that - An intense creative work-out that almost forces you to let ideas constantly flow out of you. Art from the heart, no time to contrive. Isn't that what it's about?
These are my picks from almost 800 photos taken.
Used my E-Volt along with my new Lens, Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC Macro with SLD Glass.
